Alabama Teacher Federally Indicted: Accused of Possessing Drugs With Intent to Distribute at School and Carrying a Firearm

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Alabama, together with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Montgomery Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, announced on November 2, 2026, the federal indictment of Langston Fremont Carter, 30, a teacher in Montgomery, in Montgomery County, Alabama, on drug trafficking and firearms charges. A federal grand jury returned the indictment on October 29, 2026.

The indictment charges Carter with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and two additional counts related to the unlawful possession of a firearm. According to the charging documents, the alleged offenses occurred on October 22, 2026, at L.E.A.D. Academy in Montgomery, where Carter was employed as a teacher. He is accused of possessing controlled substances, including oxycodone and marijuana, with the intent to distribute them, and is also charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possessing a firearm within a school zone.

Carter made his initial appearance in federal court on October 29, 2026, and his arraignment was scheduled for November 3, 2026. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on the drug trafficking charges; the charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime carries a mandatory minimum of five years that must run consecutively to any sentence on the other counts. A federal district judge will determine the sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors, and there is no parole in the federal system.

The ATF and the Montgomery Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Feil is prosecuting it. The U.S. Attorney's Office noted that an indictment is merely an allegation and that Carter is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
