Follow-Up: Flood Warnings Continue Across the Phoenix Metro as Tempe Town Lake Suspends All Water Activities
Phoenix and surrounding communities in Maricopa County, Arizona, continued to be hit by heavy rain on November 1, with the National Weather Service issuing flood warnings for multiple counties including Maricopa, where low-lying areas and low-water crossings could be flooded and impassable.
A first rain system on October 30 had already brought 0.1 to more than 1 inch of rain to the Phoenix metro, and on October 31 the Salt River Project began releasing water from Granite Reef Dam, flooding low-water crossings along the Salt River up to Tempe Town Lake, including McKellips Road. At 9:11 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on November 1, the City of Tempe announced that all recreational water activities on Tempe Town Lake are suspended until further notice, including pedal boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, rowing and sailing.
Northern Arizona saw emergencies of its own: Cibecue Creek rose on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, where officials ordered evacuations early on November 1, and flash flooding in Sedona's Oak Creek Canyon sent water into multiple riverside homes, prompting a large evacuation. Forecasters said rain would continue through Sunday, November 1, possibly with thunderstorms and gusts up to 60 mph.
