Nearly Half of Juneau Households Heat With Fuel Oil, New Census Data Show
The U.S. Census Bureau released new American Community Survey data on October 29, measuring wastewater systems, rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle ownership for the first time. The City and Borough of Juneau, Alaska, with more than 31,000 residents, met the threshold for supplemental estimates allowing comparison with communities nationwide; the figures were reported locally on November 2.
From 2020 through 2024, 47.7% of occupied Juneau homes primarily used fuel oil or kerosene for heat, far above the national figure of 3.9%. Electricity was the main heating source for 35.1% of Juneau households, below the national 41.3%. Juneau's homeownership rate was 63.6%, slightly below the national 65.2%.
The municipal utility has about 7,150 sewer connections served by 140 miles of pipes and 45 lift stations, with three treatment plants processing about 3.3 million gallons of sewage a day. City officials reported spending more than $10 million on water and wastewater improvements in fiscal 2026, including upgrades to the Mendenhall treatment plant and two lift stations.
A 5% increase in combined water and sewer rates took effect July 1, raising the monthly flat residential bill from $154.14 to $161.85.
