Trump Issues All Saints' Day Presidential Message: He Will Always Defend Americans' Freedom to Express Their Faith Openly

WASHINGTON — The White House on November 1 released President Donald J. Trump's Presidential Message on All Saints' Day. In the message, Trump joined Christians across the nation in honoring the men and women through the centuries whose extraordinary lives of faithfulness reveal the great goodness and love to which human beings can aspire, and said he will always defend the freedom of Americans to express their faith openly and without fear. All Saints' Day falls on November 1 and is the Christian feast honoring all the saints.

The message said the names of saints are interwoven throughout the American landscape: San Francisco, California, was named for Saint Francis of Assisi; San Antonio, Texas, for Saint Anthony of Padua; St. Louis, Missouri, for a saintly king of France; and St. Paul, Minnesota, for the great Apostle. From Santa Monica, California, to St. Augustine, Florida, saints greet Americans on maps and road signs across the country. Saints are just as present in trusted institutions, the message said: families turn to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital when a child is gravely ill, young Americans study at Saint John's University, Saint Louis University, Saint Bonaventure University and many other colleges and universities named for saints, and every March millions of Americans celebrate Saint Patrick's Day with parades, music and the wearing of green.

The message also recalled a piece of sports history: when New Orleans received its National Football League franchise on November 1, 1966, the date was no accident — it was All Saints' Day. A local businessman championed the name 'Saints,' inspired by the city's celebrated jazz anthem, 'When the Saints Go Marching In.' From sea to shining sea, the message said, these names are a constant reminder that a great civilization needs more than material success: it needs examples of goodness, and heroes not only of strength and achievement but also of mercy, sacrifice, humility and love.

Trump honored four saints in particular: Saint Junípero Serra, who carried the Christian faith through the missions of California; Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, who helped build Catholic education in America; Saint Katharine Drexel, who devoted her fortune and her life to educating and serving poor and impoverished communities; and Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, who established schools, orphanages and hospitals, putting Christian charity into action and bringing the hope of Jesus to those most in need. Countless other saints — parents, teachers, nurses, workers, missionaries and neighbors whose names history never recorded — quietly showed what holiness can look like in ordinary life, the message said.

All Saints' Day proclaims a truth at the heart of the Christian faith, the message said: death does not have the final word, and Christians believe that through the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the grave has been conquered and eternal life has been opened to all who believe in Him. 'On this All Saints' Day, Melania and I offer our warmest greetings to all who observe this holy feast. I will always defend the freedom of Americans to express their faith openly and without fear,' Trump said in closing, wishing that the lives of the saints would renew gratitude for the nation's spiritual inheritance, strengthen the resolve to love and serve one another, and inspire Americans to live with the faith, courage and charity that make a people — and a nation — forever great.
