Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder Recreated Live in San Diego on April 3
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder on April 3, 2027, at 7:30 p.m.: trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos leads a band in a full recreation of Lee Morgan's classic album, closing this season's three full-album recreations in the San Diego Symphony's Jazz @ The Jacobs series.
The band includes tenor saxophonist Brian Levy, pianist Sam Hirsh, bassist Danton Boller and drummer Willie Jones III. The program includes the title track The Sidewinder along with Boy, What a Night and Hocus-Pocus. Morgan, a defining trumpet voice of hard bop, saw the title tune cross over to the pop charts in 1964, becoming one of Blue Note Records' biggest singles.
San Diego's Young Lions Jazz Conservatory performs before the concert. The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
The series' earlier recreations revisited Miles Davis' Milestones and Billie Holiday's All or Nothing at All.
