Martha Stewart, the 85-year-old American lifestyle mogul, formally apologized on November 1 for dressing up as a homeless person for Halloween. According to Page Six, Stewart posted the apology on Instagram on Sunday, written in her phone's Notes app, calling the getup 'insensitive and not funny,' saying she 'really screwed up' and was 'very sorry.' She added that she knows many people are suffering economically.
The episode began on Halloween, when Stewart posted an Instagram carousel promoting her QVC candles, including a photo of herself in ripped clothing with dirt on her face, holding a sign reading 'I am hungry. Help me.' The photo drew a wave of criticism and was quickly deleted. In an earlier statement to Page Six, she said the costume was intended to bring awareness to homelessness and that she was distressed it had offended people, but she stopped short of apologizing, as GSM reported earlier in the day.
Reaction to the apology was mixed: many accepted it, while others continued to criticize her for joking about poverty.
