Nashville Rallies Past Red Bulls 3-2: Two Own Goals and a Stoppage-Time Winner Tie the MLS Points Record
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville SC erased a two-goal deficit with two New York own goals and a stoppage-time header from Sam Surridge to beat the New York Red Bulls 3-2 in the rain at GEODIS Park on Nov. 1, in the penultimate round of the MLS regular season. The win lifted Nashville to 74 points, tying the MLS single-season record, and ended the Red Bulls' postseason hopes.
New York could have led earlier: in the 19th minute, 19-year-old Cade Cowell's penalty kick was saved by Nashville rookie goalkeeper Brian Schwake. The Red Bulls still struck twice before halftime — 18-year-old Julian Hall scored his 13th goal of the season in the 34th minute, and Rafael Mosquera, who had come on as a substitute one minute earlier, scored his first MLS goal in the 40th for a 2-0 lead.
The comeback began just before halftime, when Red Bulls defender Tim Parker scored an own goal to make it 2-1. Defender Julian Bazan added a second own goal in the 81st minute to level the match. One minute into stoppage time, Cristian Espinoza recorded his 15th assist of the season — a career high — and Surridge headed in his 19th goal of the campaign for the winner. Schwake finished with two saves; New York's Ethan Horvath made seven.
Nashville improved to 22-3-8, and its 74 points tie Inter Miami's MLS record set in 2024, with one regular-season match left to break it — Nov. 7 at FC Cincinnati. Nashville had already clinched the Supporters' Shield, finished the season unbeaten at home, set a league record with 44 home points and extended its unbeaten run to nine matches. The Red Bulls (11-16-6) were eliminated from the playoffs, and Toronto FC's 3-1 loss to Atlanta United on the same day clinched an Eastern Conference postseason berth for the Columbus Crew.
