Connecticut State Representative Charged With Stealing Campaign Signs Tracked by AirTag
Reported on November 1, Connecticut state Rep. Anne Hughes of Easton, Fairfield County, was arrested on suspicion of stealing campaign signs and received a summons for sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor. Easton police said the signs were taken from the roadside near Route 59 and Judd Road; after campaign workers reported them missing, police used an AirTag hidden in one of the signs to locate property belonging to Hughes and recovered the signs.
Hughes represents the 135th District and has served since 2019. She apologized on social media, said she takes full responsibility, and said the signs should not have been placed on public property. The case comes just days before the November 3 election; the Easton Republican Town Committee said it raises questions about her judgment. The charge is only an allegation, and Hughes is presumed innocent until a court rules.
Hughes's 135th District covers Easton, Redding and Weston. Coming on the eve of the election, the case is also a reminder to every campaign: where roadside signs may be placed and how they may be handled are governed by law, and violations can quickly become criminal charges, with the reputational damage often arriving before any court conclusion.
