MOCA's Immigrant Storytelling Performance 'Echoes of Arrival: Becoming' Plays Chinatown on Nov. 6
On November 1, the Museum of Chinese in America announced that its fall performance, "MOCA PERFORMS — Echoes of Arrival: Becoming," will play the final show of its season on Friday, November 6, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the museum at 215 Centre Street in Manhattan's Chinatown. General admission is $20; museum members pay $15. According to the museum's event page, the work was conceived by Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li, the museum's director of performing arts, storytelling and community, and treats immigration as an ongoing process of "becoming" rather than a one-time arrival.
The performance features seven artists from Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago, telling their own stories through spoken word, poetry, music, dance and stand-up comedy, with a different lineup each night. The November 6 cast is Nikkiesha N. McLeod, Timmy Ong, Jeremy Rafal, Nedelka Sotelo and Fang Tseng. The museum noted that event dates, times, fees and details may change, and asked audiences to check the event page before buying tickets.
For New York's Chinese community, this immigrant-storytelling performance staged in Chinatown is both an arts event and a chance for the community to narrate its own experience together — well suited to residents interested in immigrant stories and Asian American community culture.
