One Dead, Six Injured in Fairfield Halloween Store Shooting: Police Call It a Targeted Attack by a Lone Gunman Still at Large
Fairfield, Solano County, California: A gunman opened fire inside a Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center mall on the night of October 30, killing one person and injuring six others. The FBI confirmed on October 31 that it has deployed an Evidence Response Team from its Sacramento field office to assist Fairfield police.
Police were called to the store, a seasonal pop-up occupying a former Best Buy space in the mall, at about 8:30 p.m. Officers found seven people shot; one died at the scene and six were taken to area hospitals, at least three of them in critical condition as of October 31.
Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said Friday night that detectives had not yet determined how many shots were fired. In an update on the morning of October 31, the department said preliminary information indicates the shooting stemmed from a targeted incident involving a single suspect inside the store. The suspect fled before officers arrived and remains at large; detectives are reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify the person responsible.
Police said they do not believe there is an immediate threat to the public. The mall remained an active crime scene on October 31 as detectives interviewed witnesses, and officers from Suisun City police and the California Highway Patrol helped secure the perimeter of the 130-store complex.
