Boston's Beacon Hill Closes Historic Streets to Cars Tonight, 4 to 9 p.m., for Halloween
BOSTON — Beacon Hill, Boston's historic gas-lit neighborhood, closes its streets to cars again for Halloween night. The Beacon Hill Civic Association, working with the city and police, is barricading multiple streets from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 31 so that crowds of trick-or-treaters can move safely through the neighborhood.
According to the association, the vehicle-free streets are: all of Branch Street; Chestnut Street from Walnut to Charles; Mount Vernon Street from Joy to Charles; Pinckney Street from Joy to West Cedar; West Cedar Street from Revere to Chestnut; Myrtle Street from Joy to Revere; Irving Street from Phillips to Myrtle; and South Russell Street from Cambridge to Myrtle.
The Halloween street closure is a long-standing Beacon Hill tradition. Residents of the red-brick rowhouses hand out candy at their doors, and cobblestoned lanes such as Acorn Street fill with costumed children, making the hill one of the city's most atmospheric trick-or-treat routes.
The civic association will also gather volunteers at 10 a.m. on November 1 at the Phillips Street Playground for a morning-after cleanup. Police advise drivers to avoid the Beacon Hill area that evening, as crowds around Charles Street will be heavy.
