Nebraska Raises Current-Year Revenue Forecast by $23.2 Million: Gov. Pillen Says About $393 Million a Year Must Still Be Solved Over Three Years

LINCOLN, Nebraska — The Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board (NEFAB), meeting at the State Capitol in Lincoln, Lancaster County, on October 30, voted to add $23.2 million to its revenue projections for General Fund receipts for the current fiscal year, according to a statement from the Governor's Office distributed via GovDelivery.

The Legislature's official Unicameral Update and Nebraska Public Media reported that the revision puts projected net receipts for the current fiscal year, which runs through June 30, 2027, at $6.805 billion — $23.2 million more than projected in February, an increase of about 0.3%. The additional revenue will go into the state's cash reserve fund.

The outlook for the next biennium darkened at the same time: revenue for fiscal years 2027-28 and 2028-29 is now projected to come in about $365.9 million below earlier Legislative Fiscal Office estimates, leaving the state facing a projected shortfall of roughly $1.19 billion for the upcoming biennium. For the current year, the state still faces a shortfall of about $208.56 million against the 3% reserve required by state law.

In a statement after the meeting, Gov. Jim Pillen said the state must have the courage to reduce the size of government instead of growing it, and that, just like ordinary Nebraskans, state government must live within its means. He said the forecast means the state has about $393 million per year to solve for over the next three years.

The board's projections underpin the Legislature's budget work. The figures are not final: the Tax Rate Review Committee meets in November, and the forecasting board reconvenes in February.
