Coyote Carries a Cat Through a La Verne Neighborhood in Broad Daylight; Residents Say Sightings Are Up

La Verne — At about 8 a.m. on October 29, in a residential neighborhood near Foothill Boulevard in La Verne, Los Angeles County, California, a coyote carrying a cat in its mouth strolled along a sidewalk and across the street, photographed by a resident. The photos show the good-sized coyote walking past parked cars with a black-and-white cat in its jaws, entirely unbothered.

The resident who took the photos said it was already broad daylight, and the coyote ambled back and forth on the neighborhood street. The resident said neighbors have reported coyotes appearing in the area more frequently than before recently, with some said to have attacked dogs, and urged everyone to keep a close eye on their pets.

La Verne sits at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, with open hillside directly north of its neighborhoods, and coyote sightings in foothill communities are not unusual. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) notes that coyotes are generally active between sunset and sunrise but may be seen at any hour, and a daylight sighting does not by itself mean the animal is sick or dangerous. September through November is when young coyotes disperse to find new territory, and sighting reports often rise during this period.

CDFW advises residents: never feed coyotes, do not leave pet food outside, and keep trash cans tightly covered; cats are best kept indoors, and small dogs should be supervised outdoors on a short leash. If you encounter a coyote, do not approach it and do not run; stand tall, wave your arms and make loud noise to haze it and preserve its fear of people. Aggressive behavior, such as attacks on pets or threats to people, can be reported through CDFW's Wildlife Incident Reporting system.

There were no reports of the coyote injuring anyone or having further contact with residents as of publication.
