Arizona Voter-Registration Groups Probed: U.S. Attorney Refers Case to FBI
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona announced on October 30 that U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine has opened a case into recent reporting about three non-profit organizations registering non-citizens to vote in Arizona, and has already referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a thorough federal investigation.
The office attached two letters to its announcement, both dated October 26 and addressed to Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap. The letters name the three organizations — Stand Indivisible Arizona, Worker Power and When We Count — and encourage the two election officials to review voter registrations associated with them.
According to the letters, the organizations and their volunteers or employees may have violated Arizona law, A.R.S. § 16-182, which prohibits registering non-citizens in elections: knowingly causing or procuring another person to be registered while knowing that person is not entitled to register. The office added that knowingly causing another person to be registered to vote while knowing that person is not entitled to do so would also violate federal law.
The office reminded the public that voting is limited solely to U.S. citizens, and that a non-citizen may not vote in Tuesday's election even if they have legal authority to be in the country on a visa or as a legal permanent resident. The midterm elections are held on Tuesday, November 3.
The release, numbered 2026-184, announced no charges. Whether the three organizations in fact registered anyone who was not entitled to vote remains subject to the FBI investigation and the election officials' review.
