Smithsonian's 'Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond' Now on View: 120+ Objects Tell Asian Americans' Capital Story

'Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond,' an exhibition presented by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, is now on view at the Anacostia Community Museum in Washington, D.C. Taking the city's Chinatown as both a geographical focal point and a historical nexus, the show presents Asian Americans' contributions to the cultural and built environment of the nation's capital.

The exhibition features more than 120 objects — photographs, architectural drawings, sketchbooks and ephemera — drawn from Smithsonian collections and local private collections, spanning the 1970s to the present. Its three sections cover efforts in the 1970s and 1980s to raise Chinatown's visibility, including drawings by Alfred H. Liu, the architect who designed the Chinatown Friendship Arch; Asian martial arts as a vehicle for self-expression and community building; and contemporary artists using graffiti and street art to claim space for multiple communities.
