Arkansas's southern yellow pine resource has been shrinking for five years, with acreage down about 9.6% since 2020, according to a report released around October 29-30. Union County, centered on El Dorado in the southern part of the state, has seen the greatest loss, driven by urban and suburban development, volatile lumber prices, rising land and labor costs, and competition from alternative imports; some owners have switched species or let stands revert to mixed forest.
El Dorado is known as the heart of Arkansas's oil and timber country, and the decline signals pressure on the broader southern timber belt and mill towns despite strong housing demand. The forestry community opposes indiscriminate logging and is calling for tax incentives, reforestation support and markets for certified sustainable wood; a state review of sustainable forestry incentives is expected to follow.
