Maine transportation officials have announced about $40 million for improvements along U.S. Route 1 in the town of Kittery in York County, covering repaving, guardrails, sidewalks and safety work, with construction to proceed in phases over the coming construction seasons. Route 1 is Maine's principal coastal corridor, and Kittery, the state's southern gateway, absorbs the first wave of weekend tourist traffic from Boston and New Hampshire.
Local officials say phased scheduling will limit summer disruptions, though business groups worry that delays could affect hotel and restaurant revenue. Winter weather and coastal erosion complicate coastal road maintenance, and drivers should follow Maine DOT notices during construction.
