Dead Endangered Birds and a Beached Monk Seal Found on Kauai, Hawaii, Being Tested for H5N1 Avian Flu; No Human Cases
Hawaii wildlife officials reported around October 29-30 that dead endangered birds and a beached Hawaiian monk seal had been found on Kauai and are being tested for H5N1 avian flu, with results pending from a mainland laboratory. The seal's death has not been confirmed as H5N1-related, and no human infections have been found.
Officials remind the public not to touch stranded or dead animals and to call wildlife authorities instead. Since 2022, H5N1 has spread globally among wild birds and mammals, and the monk seal is federally protected with a total population of about 1,600; vigilance is high in Kauai County.
