CDC: Share of U.S. Children and Adolescents Ages 5-17 Ever Diagnosed With ADHD Rose to 13.8 Percent in 2025

The National Center for Health Statistics of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in the QuickStats feature of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) on October 29 that 13.8 percent of U.S. children and adolescents ages 5-17 had ever been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in 2025, up from 9.9 percent in 2019.

The figures come from the National Health Interview Survey. The share moved from 9.9 percent in 2019 to 11.6 percent in 2020, 10.8 percent in 2021, 11.5 percent in 2022, 13.4 percent in 2023, 13.6 percent in 2024 and 13.8 percent in 2025.

By sex, the percentage for boys rose from 13.2 percent in 2019 to 17.5 percent in 2025, and for girls from 6.5 percent to 9.9 percent.

The measure is based on a parent answering yes to whether a doctor or other health professional had ever told them the child had ADHD or attention-deficit disorder (ADD). The report was authored by Nazik Elgaddal of the National Center for Health Statistics.
