New York: Governor Hochul Invests Nearly $13 Million to Revitalize Essential Community Services on Long Island
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on October 29 that the state is investing nearly $13 million in six renovation projects for essential community services on Long Island, covering disability services, a food bank, a community health center, a volunteer fire department, a school aquatic center and a Little League.
The Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County receives $3 million for roof replacement and building systems upgrades at its Roosevelt campus, and to reopen Café Connections, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Island Harvest Food Bank receives $1.5 million to renovate its Melville facility and add two workforce training programs, a demonstration kitchen, a bulk product repacking room and a community room.
Long Island Select Healthcare receives $3 million to rehabilitate its Federally Qualified Health Center in Central Islip, which serves more than 9,000 low-income and vulnerable patients a year, modernizing aging infrastructure and clinical equipment. The Village of Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department receives $1 million for new radio equipment.
The Deer Park School District receives $3 million to rebuild its High School Aquatic Center with ADA-compliant lifts, stairs and locker rooms; the facility, nearly 50 years old, had been closed to the public for safety reasons. The Bay Shore-Brightwaters Little League receives $1 million for fencing, bleachers, fields and batting cages.
Hochul said these organizations are pillars of Long Island communities and the investment helps them keep serving residents. State Senators Monica R. Martinez and Siela Bynoe and Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos were among those joining the announcement.
