Indiana: Gov. Braun Powers Automotive Industry Jobs With $10M Grant Program

Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced on October 27, through the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), the launch of the ADAPT grant program to help the state's small and mid-sized auto parts manufacturers shift toward hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and hydrogen powertrain capabilities.

The program is funded by a $10.79 million U.S. Department of Energy award; Indiana is one of five auto-workforce states sharing $50 million in federal funding. Grants range from $100,000 to $1 million, require at least a 1:1 company match, are paid as reimbursements, and can cover equipment, software and workforce training.

Applications opened on October 27, 2026, and are due January 8, 2027; projects must be completed by December 31, 2028. Eligible applicants are Indiana-headquartered, for-profit small and mid-sized auto manufacturers with fewer than 1,500 employees, with preference for those at or below 500, concentrated in internal-combustion components and willing to serve as federal sub-recipients.

The state said Indiana has more than 500 auto parts suppliers, builds 1.3 million cars and trucks a year, second in the nation, and has about 320 small and mid-sized manufacturers supporting more than 34,000 jobs. The Center for Automotive Research projects about 65 percent of U.S. light vehicles will have battery-equipped propulsion by 2032.

Applications undergo competitive review with Conexus Indiana and require IEDC and DOE approval; awards will be finalized in spring 2027.

Braun and Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich said the program is meant to make sure Indiana suppliers are not left behind as powertrain technology changes, protecting the state's auto manufacturing jobs.
