Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond issued an opinion on October 29, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, ruling that the winner of the November 3 U.S. Senate special election may take office as soon as the state certifies the election results, serving both the remainder of the current term and the following full six-year term. That means interim Sen. Alan Armstrong could leave office within days, rather than on January 3, when the current term ends; state election results are typically certified on the Friday after the election, November 6. Armstrong had pushed to remain in office to pass sweeping permitting reforms aimed at reducing permitting delays and streamlining approvals for pipelines and other energy projects; his office said it is reviewing Drummond's opinion and that the senator's full focus remains on passing permitting reform, lowering utility prices and growing the economy. Oklahoma voters will choose between Republican Congressman Kevin Hern and Democratic nominee N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, with two independents and one Libertarian also on the ballot. The Senate seat was left vacant when Sen. Markwayne Mullin became Secretary of Homeland Security earlier this year; Armstrong, a corporate energy executive, was appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt in March to finish Mullin's term.
