Indiana Governor Braun Says State Elections Are Secure as Justice Department Sends Monitors to Lake and Marion Counties
Indiana Governor Mike Braun told reporters in South Bend on October 29 that he believes Indiana's elections are secure, saying the state has "never had an issue with that," and that he wants every legal vote cast and counted.
Braun spoke as the U.S. Department of Justice plans to send election monitors to voting sites in Lake County and Marion County, two counties that have consistently supported Democrats in congressional races. Braun did not answer whether he had spoken directly with the Justice Department, but said such spot checks could be conducted under any administration, and that the monitoring covering only a few locations in the state "probably means that they feel we run a pretty good show."
DOJ officials have called this year's nationwide election monitoring effort the largest in the department's history. Braun's remarks came ahead of the November 3 Election Day; the state did not publish in the report the number of monitors or the list of voting sites they will enter. Voters in Lake and Marion counties will vote under normal procedures, and the governor's office stressed its goal of ensuring legal votes are counted.
