Los Angeles Clears Homeless Encampment Beside Freeway on San Fernando Road on October 29: More Than 25 Arrested
A large homeless encampment beside a freeway on San Fernando Road in Los Angeles was targeted in a law enforcement sweep this week, in which Los Angeles police arrested more than 25 people and rescued animals including dogs, cats, and chickens.
The sweep took place near the Sun Valley-Arleta border. Before the operation, animal welfare advocate Joey Tuccio had spent a week drawing attention to the area, saying City Hall had allowed illegal breeding and animal cruelty to flourish. Councilmember Imelda Padilla, who represents the district, confirmed the enforcement action on October 29 and said Los Angeles police had arrested more than 25 people. Advocates had previously found dogs living in drainage pipes and sewers near the encampment, which brought the site's conditions into focus.
Padilla said she plans to introduce a motion asking the city's Bureau of Engineering and the Los Angeles County Public Works Department to improve infrastructure in the area to prevent the encampment from returning. The report also noted that Los Angeles already restricts dog breeding and the open sale of dogs, and that the incident has renewed questions about enforcement. The sweep touches on both homeless services and animal protection, and how those arrested and the rescued animals will be accommodated remains for authorities to explain.
