Poetry Foundation Awards $1.52 Million in Fall Grants to 52 Poetry and Literary Organizations Across 23 States and Territories

The Poetry Foundation, headquartered in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, announced on October 28 that it has awarded $1.52 million in fall grants to 52 nonprofit organizations across 23 states and territories, including nonprofit poetry organizations, poetry publishers and literary journals, and literary arts service organizations that support poets.

The awards are primarily general operating support grants, giving recipient organizations flexibility in how they use the funds. The largest grants, $60,000 each, went to three organizations: Woodland Pattern in Wisconsin, the literary journal Obsidian in Illinois, and the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses in New York. Three organizations received $50,000 each: the Academy of American Poets, the Community Literature Initiative in California, and The Poetry Project in New York.

Michelle T. Boone, the foundation's president and chief executive officer, said the 52 organizations work at the forefront of literature with bold and necessary work that enriches the cultural landscape, and that the foundation is proud to support them in cultivating new voices, sparking dialogue and growing the poetry community. The fall awards bring the foundation's total grantmaking in 2026 to more than $3.4 million.

Beyond the fall grants, the foundation's 2026 grantmaking includes $1,025,000 in two-year awards to a second Sustainable Futures cohort of organizations; more than $400,000 in special opportunity grants supporting organizations including the AWP conference, the National Book Awards and the PEN America World Voices Festival; and $250,000 in opportunity funding for individual poets, including residencies at MacDowell and United States Artists and supplemental contributions to the poet laureates of Chicago and Illinois.
