Los Angeles, California: UCLA Receives $1.014 Million to Design Stormwater Capture Project With Metro
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, announced on October 28 that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved $1.014 million on October 20 to design a stormwater-capture project that UCLA will build with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), turning campus-edge sidewalks and street corners into native gardens and permeable surfaces that store and filter runoff.
The grant comes from the county Safe Clean Water Program's $152.9 million allocation for fiscal year 2026-27. The program, created by Measure W in 2018, raises about $280 million a year for stormwater management countywide and has funded $1.9 billion since passage.
The project covers the campus gateway corners at Westwood Plaza and Le Conte Avenue and sites across campus, with up to 18 drywells and three trash-capture systems to keep pollutants out of the ocean. Planted medians will protect about 900 feet of existing bike lanes.
Caltrans has offered to cover 25 percent of design and construction costs. Design is expected to take about a year, and construction could begin as early as October 2028. The site sits near Metro's Westwood/UCLA D Line station at Westwood and Wilshire boulevards, scheduled to open in fall 2027.
Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath and Los Angeles Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky said in statements that the investment combines flood control, cleaner water and a better campus gateway for students and the surrounding community.
