Honolulu Pearl Harbor Bike Path Cleanup: 199 Volunteers Remove 3.13 Tons of Trash Along the 5.2-Mile Trail

HONOLULU, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii — Nearly 200 military volunteers and community members removed 3.13 tons of trash during the biannual Pearl Harbor Historic Trail and Bike Path Cleanup on Saturday, October 10, along the 5.2-mile bike path on the Pearl Harbor shoreline.

A total of 199 volunteers from 12 organizations took part, including service members, civilian personnel and families from Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, joined by the City and County of Honolulu and several community groups. Volunteers cleared trash, cut back overgrowth and disposed of debris that could otherwise wash into storm drains and harbor waterways, across multiple cleanup areas from Aiea to Waipahu.

The event was organized in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Facility Maintenance Stormwater Quality Division and is held twice a year. 'This cleanup is something we look forward to twice a year, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who takes time out of their day to volunteer,' said Kylie Tom, one of the organizers. Capt. Frye, the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam commander, said giving back to the community where service members live and serve is at the core of who they are.

The 5.2-mile bike path traces the historic train route of the former Oahu Railway and Land Company, with lookout points showcasing Pearl Harbor's historic lochs, landmarks and protected coastal wetlands.
