OKLAHOMA — Glynn Simmons, believed to be one of the longest-serving wrongful-conviction prisoners in U.S. history, died on the morning of October 28, a few weeks short of his 73rd birthday. Family and friends told The Oklahoman he died of complications from the cancer he had been fighting since his release.
Simmons was accused of fatally shooting clerk Carolyn Sue Rogers during a 1974 liquor store robbery in Edmond, when he was 21 and, he always maintained, out of state at the time; he consistently denied involvement. He spent 48 years in prison until an Oklahoma County judge ordered his release in 2023 and later that year declared him "actually innocent."
His lead attorney, Joe Norwood, called Simmons a fighter who went straight from prison into a battle with cancer and never gave up. In a 2024 interview, Simmons said people could see resilience, struggle and love in his experience.
