More than 170 Nebraska school leaders join cyberattack tabletop exercise on phishing and ransomware
Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska — The Nebraska Department of Education reported on Oct. 26 that more than 170 school leaders took part in a tabletop exercise helping public and nonpublic K-12 schools across the state prepare for cyber threats; participants included superintendents, principals, IT directors, teachers and staff, as well as personnel from educational service units and the department. The exercise was held at the department's offices and livestreamed to educational service units statewide, hosted by the department's information systems officer, with support from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Nebraska State Patrol, the state information analysis center, the FBI's Omaha cybercrime team and the state chief information officer's office, among others. It was the first exercise of its kind held for schools statewide; over three hours, participants responded to two realistic scenarios: first a widespread phishing attack, then a ransomware demand to unlock stolen student information. Commissioner of Education Brian Maher said the exercise aims to ensure schools can withstand and recover from increasingly frequent and sophisticated cyber threats.
