Social Security Sets 2027 COLA at 3.6%: About 72 Million Beneficiaries to Get Bigger Checks From January, Averaging About $75 More a Month
The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has set the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 at 3.6 percent. According to the agency's website, the increase was determined on October 14 and applies to benefits for December 2026, paid in January 2027, covering about 72 million Social Security beneficiaries nationwide; about 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will see the higher amounts from December 31, 2026. It is the largest annual increase since 2023's 8.7 percent, and above the 2.8 percent set for 2026.
Based on SSA estimates cited by multiple outlets, the average retired worker's monthly benefit will rise by about $75, or roughly $900 over a full year. The adjustment is calculated from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing the third-quarter 2026 average with the third quarter of 2025: the index rose 3.4 percent year over year in July, 3.5 percent in August and 3.9 percent in September. Since 1975, annual Social Security increases have been tied to this inflation measure and are determined automatically by law, without new legislation from Congress.
The SSA says the next COLA will be announced in October 2027. Medicare Part B premium amounts for 2027 have not yet been announced; because those premiums are usually deducted directly from Social Security checks, the net increase beneficiaries actually receive will depend on the final premium.
