MADISON, Wisconsin — Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), on October 22 announced more than $102 million in financial assistance through the Lead Service Line Replacement Program for 12 municipalities, to remove an estimated 15,028 private lead water service lines and ensure clean, safe drinking water across the state.
The program is a subprogram of the federal Safe Drinking Water Loan Program and uses funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which included $50 billion for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's water infrastructure, including $15 billion for lead service line replacement nationwide. The governor's office said that since 2019, Evers has allocated nearly $500 million supporting the replacement of 86,094 lead service lines.
Examples of preliminarily approved projects include the City of Neenah in Winnebago County, with more than $1.9 million for 249 lines, and the City of Wausau in Marathon County, with more than $10.6 million for 1,194 lines.
