USDA Announces $1.34 Billion in Fertilizer Manufacturing Investment: Eight FIELDS Projects Selected
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Oct. 22 the selection of eight projects under its Fertilizer Investment & Expansion for Long-Term Domestic Supply (FIELDS) Program, representing more than $1.34 billion in total proposed investment, including approximately $573 million in proposed USDA funding, to expand domestic fertilizer manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the selections in Nebraska.
The selected projects include TalusAg, deploying 20 modular ammonia units across 11 locations in seven states (about $99.8 million in proposed USDA funding); PCI Nitrogen, modernizing facilities in Pasadena, Texas, and St. Helens, Oregon (about $100 million); Intrepid Potash, building a sulfate of potash plant near Carlsbad, New Mexico (about $139 million); Agriculture Project Holdco, developing two manure-based facilities in Lewis, Kansas, and Fair Oaks, Indiana (about $116.9 million); and Peace Valley (Florida), AdvanSix (Virginia), SUL4R-PLUS (Illinois) and True Organic Products (California, Oregon and Arizona). Together the projects are expected to support about 1.08 million tons of annual production capacity.
USDA said the $500 million FIELDS Program was launched under President Trump, supplemented by funding recovered from failed projects under the prior administration's Fertilizer Production Expansion Program. USDA economic analysis estimates the added production could reduce nitrogen fertilizer prices by 4.4% and potash prices by 5.3%, while increasing domestic nitrogen production by 3.7% and potash production by nearly 40%. "Farm security is national security. America cannot afford to depend on foreign nations for the fertilizer needed to grow our food and feed our families," Rollins said. Vance said 1.87 million farmers farming over 8.74 million acres would have lower-cost fertilizer made by Americans.
