FEMA Opens $400 Million Flood Mitigation Funding Opportunity to Help Communities Reduce Flood Risk
WASHINGTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on October 22 announced a $400 million funding opportunity to help communities across the United States reduce flood risk. FEMA said flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the country, and that the money, offered through the Flood Mitigation Assistance program, aims to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insured by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Eligible applicants are states, territories, federally recognized Tribal Nations and the District of Columbia, and properties involved must carry an NFIP policy. Eligible projects include building acquisitions and elevations, drainage improvements and stabilizing soil.
FEMA will hold a webinar on November 4 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. The application period runs from October 22, 2026 to February 26, 2027, through Grants.gov, with details on FEMA's website. (GSM, based on FEMA's October 22 advisory)
"Flooding can affect communities across the country with devastating consequences for people and property," said FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton. "This flood mitigation funding opportunity empowers our local partners to build capabilities that reduce or eliminate threats from the nation's most common and costliest natural disaster."
