Connecticut Receives Another $15 Million in Federal Reimbursement: For Road and Bridge Repairs After August 2024 Floods

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and the state's congressional delegation announced in Hartford on October 22 that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has approved another $15 million in emergency relief to reimburse the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) for road and bridge repairs after the August 2024 flooding in western Connecticut. The flooding followed the historic rainfall event of August 18, 2024.

According to the governor's office, the new approval brings total federal emergency relief for the storm to $43 million. FHWA previously approved $3 million in quick-release funds in September 2024 and a $25 million reimbursement in October 2025. The total cost of the road and bridge repairs is now estimated at about $51 million, so the federal reimbursements cover most of that cost. The governor's office said CTDOT began using its own available money to make repairs and reopen roads and bridges as soon as the storm hit, and the federal reimbursements replace that money so other department projects can go ahead as planned. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said in the announcement that the reimbursement helps ensure emergency work does not come at the expense of other projects, and Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said the money puts back resources the state used to get Connecticut moving again after the flooding.

The governor's office also said three bridges in Oxford and Southbury, in New Haven County, are being designed for a future construction project, and those costs are also eligible for emergency relief funding. The announcement was made jointly with U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and U.S. Representatives Rosa DeLauro, Jim Himes and Jahana Hayes.
