According to video released by a White House spokesperson on October 22, Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob joined multiple Catholic bishops and archbishops in praying for President Trump in the White House Oval Office that day. In the video, Grob stands behind Trump with eyes closed and head bowed, while Denver Archbishop James Golka places a hand on Trump's shoulder and leads the prayer: 'Thank you for giving us this beautiful country, thank you for our government, thank you for the presidency,' asking God's blessing on Trump. Trump's spiritual adviser, televangelist Paula White-Cain, was also present.
A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee confirmed that Grob did meet briefly with the president that day but offered no further comment. The White House did not respond on the purpose of the bishops' visit. Based on the video, about ten Catholic leaders took part in the unannounced visit.
The meeting came at a delicate moment in relations between the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Trump administration: the conference's president had strongly condemned Defense Secretary Hegseth's plan to livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter (the plan was later canceled by Trump), and Grob questioned the plan in his October 13 weekly column, The Branches — 'Are we becoming as barbaric as what we are trying to stop?' The bishops' conference has also publicly opposed Trump's immigration policies. Grob became Archbishop of Milwaukee in January 2025, overseeing 10 counties in southeastern Wisconsin, and is known for a bridge-building, dialogue-oriented style; he describes himself as 'not intending to enter politics, but pushed into it by the times,' whose politics 'is Jesus Christ.'
