Crowley and Tiffany Clash on Taxes, Abortion and the 2020 Election in Wisconsin Governor's Race's Only Debate
The only televised debate in Wisconsin's governor's race took place on October 21 at Marquette University Law School, hosted by WISN 12 and lasting one hour. Democratic Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and Republican U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany clashed over taxes, abortion, elections and the cost of living, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, in the contest to succeed retiring Governor Tony Evers.
On taxes, Crowley called for a fairer, simpler tax system and a school funding commission but made no specific commitment on new top income-tax brackets; Tiffany argued the state's existing surplus can sustain education, transportation and health care spending alongside tax cuts. On the 2020 election, Tiffany defended his role in efforts to overturn the result, while Crowley accused him of being willing to discard hundreds of thousands of ballots; both men closed by pledging to certify the 2028 presidential election result whoever wins. On abortion, Tiffany promised to keep the current state limit of about 20 weeks.
The debate came the day after in-person absentee voting began and less than two weeks before Election Day on November 3. A Wisconsin Broadcasters Association debate, a 36-year tradition, was canceled after Tiffany declined to take part, making this the candidates' only head-to-head meeting before the election.
