Kenai Man Sentenced to Over 14 Years for Trafficking Over Four Kilograms of Fentanyl Into Alaska

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska announced on October 21 that Christian James Rodgers, of Kenai, was sentenced that day to over 14 years in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute over four kilograms of fentanyl in Alaska. Prosecutors said Rodgers, 34, was a principal fentanyl supplier for the Kenai region; once he was arrested, fentanyl in Kenai became sparse and its price doubled.

According to court documents, between September 2024 and March 2025 Rodgers conspired with at least two other individuals to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl in Alaska. He traveled to Nevada and California to meet with his co-conspirators and his source of supply to obtain fentanyl bearing Sinaloa cartel markings. He instructed a co-conspirator to ship fentanyl to Alaska, and shipped fentanyl to his own residence in Alaska himself, each shipment containing approximately two kilograms; one of the boxes also contained children's books. Rodgers also possessed a firearm in furtherance of the conspiracy, after two prior felony convictions in Alaska Superior Court in Kenai for misconduct involving controlled substances and misconduct involving weapons.

On May 20, 2025, Rodgers, Johnatan Lau-Osuna and Helmut Mey were indicted by a federal grand jury. Rodgers was charged with conspiracy, attempted distribution and being a felon in possession of a firearm. All three defendants later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and have been sentenced, with Rodgers receiving the highest sentence. In handing down the sentence, the court emphasized the disproportionate impact fentanyl has on small Alaskan communities, and how troubling it was that Rodgers' own young daughter tested positive for trace amounts of fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman for the District of Alaska said the defendant trafficked a huge quantity of fentanyl into a small Alaska community already suffering from the devastating consequences of the drug, and that the sentence sends a clear message that traffickers will be relentlessly pursued and their networks dismantled. Matthew Schlegel, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Anchorage Field Office, said Rodgers and his co-conspirators coordinated a transnational and interstate effort to bring substantial quantities of fentanyl into Alaska for distribution in a small community. The case was investigated by the FBI Anchorage Field Office, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service's Anchorage Domicile and Alaska State Troopers through the Alaska High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area initiative's Southcentral Area-Wide Narcotics team, with assistance from the Anchorage Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mac Caille Petursson.
