Interior Department Announces More Than $8.2 Million in Coastal Wetlands Grants for 17 Projects Across Nine States
The U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have announced $8,212,317 in funding through the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program for 17 coastal resilience projects across nine states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii.
The funding comes from the federal Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, which is supported by excise taxes on fishing equipment, motorboat and small-engine fuels, and import duties, and is dedicated to this grant program.
According to the Interior Department, the projects will use nature-based solutions to boost coastal resilience, including living shorelines, salt marsh and beach systems, mangrove plantings, and seagrass and oyster reef restoration, reducing flood risk, stabilizing shorelines, and protecting natural ecosystems while supporting outdoor recreation economies.
"Protecting our nation's wetlands and coastlines is vital for our communities, wildlife, and the outdoor recreational opportunities enjoyed by future generations," Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said in the announcement. "These grants reflect the Trump Administration's commitment to strengthening coastal resilience through nature-based solutions and supporting local economies."
