Champions League Matchday 3 Wednesday Wrap: Real Madrid Beat Leipzig 4-1 for Third Straight Win, Bayern Draw Arsenal 2-2, Como Rout Man United 4-1
The nine Wednesday fixtures of Champions League league-phase Matchday 3 were completed on October 21, producing 34 goals in total. Real Madrid's 4-1 home win over RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich's 2-2 draw with Arsenal, and Como's 4-1 rout of Manchester United were the night's headline results.
At the Bernabéu, Bernardo Silva bundled in the opener from close range in the 43rd minute, Arda Güler doubled the lead on 52 minutes from a Kylian Mbappé assist, and Mbappé and Yan Diomande completed the scoring, with Tidiam Gomis replying for Leipzig. According to NBC Sports' live coverage, Mbappé's goal was his 73rd in the Champions League, moving him within 17 goals of fourth-place Karim Benzema on the all-time list; according to Soccer Laduma, citing Opta, Diomande became Real Madrid's youngest substitute to score and assist in a Champions League match, a record previously held by Guti since 1999. Madrid have won all three of their matches for nine points; together with Tuesday's winners Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, three teams hold perfect records after three rounds.
At the Allianz Arena, Arsenal lost Bukayo Saka to injury about 10 minutes in, but his replacement Eberechi Eze opened the scoring. Alphonso Davies equalised about 10 minutes before halftime, Harry Kane converted a penalty around the hour — awarded after his shot struck the arm of the sliding Jurriën Timber — and Declan Rice levelled late for Arsenal. Arsenal have seven points and remain unbeaten; Bayern have five points from one win and two draws.
The other six matches: Como 4-1 Manchester United, with Nico Paz scoring twice and assisting once; Lille 2-4 Galatasaray, with Victor Osimhen capping the visitors' comeback with a long-range finish; Aston Villa 3-1 Viking, as Villa maintained a perfect start; Club Brugge 3-0 Lens; Inter Milan 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, as Inter held on with 10 men for their first win of the campaign; Real Betis 1-0 Feyenoord, decided by an Isco penalty; and Sporting Lisbon 2-3 LASK Linz, the Austrian visitors completing a comeback upset.
GSM previewed Wednesday's slate earlier in the day; Tuesday's nine matches — including Liverpool's 4-3 comeback win over Villarreal, Manchester City's 5-1 win over AEK Athens and Paris Saint-Germain's 4-2 win over Barcelona — were reported separately.
