Bilingual Play Juliet and Jul-Yingtai Comes to Jersey City This Week
In Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, Vermilion Theater brings the bilingual play Juliet and Jul-Yingtai to the city this week, in collaboration with Jersey City Theater Center, for two performances only: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m., at White Eagle Hall, 337 Newark Ave. The play is written by Wisteria Deng and Melvin Yen, with music by Silvan Tang and Panzhen Wu, and is directed by Sissi Xiqian Chen. It places Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet directly alongside the Chinese legend of the Butterfly Lovers, reimagining both as a single intertwined story told in English and Mandarin. Set in a psychiatric institute in New Jersey, the play follows Julie, an Asian American woman accused of killing her abusive husband in self-defense, and Jul, the therapist assigned to her care; Julie dreams of Hangzhou and Jul dreams of Verona, as the play asks whether an inherited ending must always repeat itself. The cast includes Samantha Haughton, Colum Greeley, Timmy Ong, Jialu Li and Lebing Lavender Zhuang. The production previously played in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
