Harwood Voters to Decide a Data Center Transparency Measure: More Than 40 Related Ballot Questions Nationwide on Nov. 3
On Election Day, Nov. 3, voters in Harwood, North Dakota, will decide a ballot measure on data centers that would require stricter review and greater transparency before the city approves industrial developments, including data centers. The local referendum is one of more than 40 data-center-related ballot questions across the country this year, reflecting rising public unease about large data center projects.
According to the Washington Examiner, voters in several states will weigh in on Nov. 3, including in Illinois' Morgan County, on whether to advise officials to restrict data center construction and operation, and in Janesville, Wisconsin, on whether voters should have to approve such developments. A measure in Grove City, Ohio, would require voter approval for projects over 50 acres, peaking above 20 megawatts, or using more than 500,000 gallons of water a day, and would set standards for approved facilities. Data centers have become a hot midterm issue: the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned tech companies this summer that data centers are growing increasingly unpopular, while Democrats have made them a campaign theme. Ohio Republican Senate candidate Jon Husted said data centers 'are, and should be, a local decision.'
