Texas Adopts 35-Second Shot Clock for High School Basketball, Becoming 35th State
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) on October 19 approved a 35-second shot clock for high school basketball in Texas, making Texas the 35th state to adopt a shot clock. Texas is one of the most populous states in the country, and the decision marks the latest step in the nationwide spread of the high school shot clock.
Under the decision, Class 6A and 5A schools will begin using the 35-second shot clock in 2028, and schools may start as early as next season if they choose. Other classifications will adopt it in the coming years. The news was first reported by Greg Riddle of The Dallas Morning News.
Adding a shot clock to high school basketball has gained momentum in recent years. The NFHS Basketball Rules Committee first approved state adoption of a shot clock in 2021, with implementation beginning in 2022. Entering the 2025-26 season, 32 states had used a shot clock in some form; Alabama and New Jersey have also voted to join this year, while Tennessee plans a partial rollout ahead of full implementation in 2029.
