Vermont Awards $3.7 Million in Tax Credits: Supporting 41 Downtown and Village Revitalization Projects
Vermont's state government announced on October 20 that it was awarding more than $3.7 million in tax credits to 41 building rehabilitation projects in 31 downtown and village centers across the state. The state expects the credits to leverage more than $20 million in building renovation investment.
The winning projects cover apartments, storefronts and community spaces, among other uses, though the awards themselves do not guarantee that projects will break ground on schedule: completion deadlines and documentation compliance risks remain with property owners. The program is one of Vermont's long-standing policy tools for revitalizing downtown and village commercial districts, using tax credits to draw private capital into the repair and reuse of older buildings.
State officials say such projects help retain local businesses, add downtown housing supply and improve community public spaces. In recent years, many of Vermont's small towns have faced population loss and hollowed-out commercial districts, and downtown revival is seen as a key measure for stabilizing local economies.
Municipalities can also use related programs to seek funding for water quality testing, public facilities and emerging contaminant screening, while these tax credits go directly to building owners' and developers' rehabilitation investments.
