New Poll: 56% of Indiana Voters Oppose Redistricting Again Before 2028, Saying It Should Wait Until After the 2030 Census
A new poll commissioned by Free Press Indiana and conducted by Bellwether Research, released today, finds, in a survey of 839 likely voters, that 56% believe state lawmakers should redraw districts only after the 2030 census, just 30% support redrawing before the 2028 election, and 14% are unsure. The poll was conducted October 8 to 11 by phone and text-to-online questionnaire, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 points.
Among those who support redistricting before 2028, 70% describe themselves as "Trump supporters first, Republicans second"; among all Republican identifiers, 54% support redrawing. Among Democrats, 88% say to wait until after 2030, 66% of independents hold the same view, and 74% of the 35-to-44 age group oppose an early redraw.
The backdrop: last year, under pressure from President Trump, Republican state legislators tried to redraw the congressional map before the midterms to favor Republicans, but 21 Republican legislators defected and joined Democrats to defeat it. Trump then launched a well-funded retaliation campaign, and in this year's primaries, five Trump-backed candidates defeated anti-redistricting Republican incumbents.
Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray, who led the opposition to redistricting, is not running for re-election this year and will step down, to be succeeded by pro-redistricting Sen. Chris Garten — meaning Republicans may push redistricting again in next year's legislative session.
Opponents are already organizing resistance: MADVoters rallied outside the Statehouse in July, with state Sen. Fady Qaddoura appearing in support.
Indiana was one of nine states that tried redistricting last year and ultimately failed.
