The Philadelphia Eagles and agent Nicole Lynn, who represents quarterback Jalen Hurts, issued a joint statement on October 19: further testing has shown that Hurts has deep vein thrombosis as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning blood clots have reached his lungs. The Eagles had already placed him on injured reserve, and GSM reported on October 18 that the initial diagnosis was a calf clot expected to sideline him for at least four games; under the updated diagnosis, Hurts will miss the rest of the season.

According to the statement, Hurts was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf, and he played the Eagles' October 11 game in London, a 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. After further testing and monitoring, the diagnosis was updated to deep vein thrombosis with bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable with no significant functional limitations, and his treatment will involve anticoagulation medication; while on blood thinners he cannot take part in any contact activities, including football. NFL Network and ESPN reported the treatment is expected to sideline him for about three months.

The statement said Hurts' prognosis is very good and a full recovery is expected; he should be able to resume contact football once off the blood thinners, will remain active around the team and continue conditioning in the meantime, and no long-term effects are anticipated.

Hurts, 28, is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and was the MVP of Super Bowl LIX. In five starts this season he passed for 933 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions; his career regular-season record is 59-28, with 18,824 passing yards, 118 passing touchdowns, 3,661 rushing yards and 64 rushing touchdowns. The Eagles are 2-4 and have lost four straight; backup Tanner McKee started on Sunday as Philadelphia lost 25-14 at home to the Carolina Panthers.
