Champions League Matchday 3: Liverpool Come From Two Down to Beat Villarreal 4-3 and Stay Perfect, Foden's Hat-Trick Fires Manchester City to a 5-1 Rout of AEK Athens, and PSG Beat Barcelona 4-2
Nine matches were played in the Champions League league phase on Tuesday. According to Sportradar results data: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal, Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens, Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Barcelona, Napoli 4-3 Bodø/Glimt, Roma 4-0 Slovan Bratislava, Porto 0-1 PSV Eindhoven, Stuttgart 1-1 Atlético Madrid, Fenerbahçe 2-2 Slavia Prague, and Sabah 1-2 Borussia Dortmund.
At Anfield, Liverpool fell behind early: Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a stray header by Virgil van Dijk to score in the fourth minute, and Sergi Cardona added a second on 28 minutes. Alexis Mac Allister's header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner started the fightback, and Ronald Araujo headed in a Rio Ngumoha cross to level right before half time, Fox Sports Australia reported. After the break, Ngumoha's low cross was smashed in by Mac Allister for his second goal to put Liverpool 3-2 ahead, and three minutes later Cody Gakpo laid the ball off for substitute Florian Wirtz to score his first goal of the season and make it 4-2. Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back late for Villarreal, but Liverpool held on to win 4-3 and maintain a perfect start in the league phase with nine points from three games, while Villarreal have three points from their first three games. Fox Sports noted that Ngumoha's first assist made him the youngest player in Liverpool history to score or assist in the Champions League; he finished with two assists.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City crushed AEK Athens 5-1 as Phil Foden scored a hat-trick, completing it in the 76th minute from a Ryan McAidoo cross in the box. Top scorer Erling Haaland spent the win on the bench, and Foden had not scored for 10 months prior to his goal in Saturday's win against Ipswich, Fox Sports Australia reported.
At the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2: Desire Doue opened the scoring in the 38th minute and teenager Xavi Espart levelled for Barcelona soon after half time; a Lucas Hernandez header put PSG 2-1 ahead and Lamine Yamal made it 2-2, before Vitinha struck in the 81st minute and Fabian Ruiz sealed the win late, leaving PSG also perfect through three matches.
