Follow-Up: CDC Reports 4,410 Measles Cases Nationwide, Up 330 in a Week, With 451 Hospitalizations

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Friday, October 16, that measles cases nationwide have reached 4,410 as of October 15, an increase of 330 from its update a week earlier, with measles-related hospitalizations for the year standing at 451, according to Reuters. When GSM last reported the national figures on October 10, the CDC count was 4,080 cases with 414 hospitalizations.

By age, children and teenagers aged 5 to 19 account for the largest share, with 1,856 cases, or 42 percent, followed by adults aged 20 and older at 1,787 cases, or 41 percent, the CDC data showed.

In Pennsylvania, the hardest-hit state, the state health department has reported 1,260 cases this year as of October 16, with 238 hospitalizations, and has reported five measles-related deaths. The CDC has confirmed two measles-associated deaths nationwide in 2026 and has not identified the states involved. The differing death counts reflect different definitions and counting methods and have fueled a public dispute between Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose department oversees the CDC.

Earlier this month, the CDC said it would deploy additional support to Pennsylvania to help investigate the outbreak, after the state formally requested federal assistance through the agency’s Epi-Aid emergency response program, as GSM reported on October 14. Earlier this month, New York declared a disaster emergency for the measles outbreak, the first such declaration by a U.S. state.
