Chinese American Writer Yiyun Li Brings New Novel to Washington: In Conversation with National Book Award Winner Rabih Alameddine
Chinese American writer Yiyun Li appeared at the Politics and Prose bookstore on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., at 7 p.m. on October 19 to present her new novel Music Against the Night, published on October 13, in conversation with National Book Award winner Rabih Alameddine. The event, presented with the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, was free with first-come, first-served seating. The novel, part of Li's Nocturne Trilogy, is set in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and follows two musical prodigies, John Field, creator of the nocturne form, and Adelaide of French India, as they weigh talent and ambition amid the upheavals of their era. Born in Beijing, Li served a year in the military before coming to the United States to study, later turning to writing in English. She now teaches creative writing at Princeton University and has received honors including a MacArthur Fellowship and the PEN/Faulkner Award; her 2025 memoir Things in Nature Merely Grow drew wide attention. On October 13 she discussed the new novel on NPR's Fresh Air. (GSM, based on the Politics and Prose event page and NPR)
