Maryland Teacher Vacancies Fall 73.3% in Four Years, From 2,145 to 572
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, State Superintendent of Schools Carey M. Wright and State Board of Education President Joshua L. Michael announced on October 19 at Hillsmere Elementary School in Annapolis that teacher vacancies in Maryland public schools have fallen from 2,145 in the 2022-23 school year to 572 this school year, a 73.3 percent drop over four years that cut the vacancy share from about 3.4 percent to 0.9 percent. Maryland employs more than 64,000 public school educators. State officials credited salary enhancements, the Grow Your Own Educators program and recruitment and retention partnerships with school systems and labor groups: at least 16 districts have received a combined $33.7 million in Grow Your Own grants to help nonlicensed school staff become certified teachers, and in August the state announced nearly $15 million more to support 845 educators in high-need fields such as special education and early childhood education. In Anne Arundel County, where the announcement was made, vacancies fell from 283 in 2022 to 16 on the first day of school this August. Moore said his administration would keep investing until every vacancy is filled.
