Spelman College Receives Nearly $400,000 From NASA to Study Atlanta Ozone and Plant Injury With TEMPO Satellite Data
Spelman College, in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, announced on November 2 that it has received a grant of nearly $400,000 from NASA to investigate the relationship between air quality and plant injury in Atlanta using TEMPO satellite data, while building a STEM research pipeline for its students.
The project, officially titled "Using TEMPO Satellite Data to Assess Ozone Injury to Plants in Atlanta, Georgia, while Building a Student Research Pipeline at Spelman College," will examine how ozone exposure relates to plant injury, combining NASA data with observations from the Spelman College Ozone Garden.
The principal investigator is Jessica Terrien, assistant professor of environmental and health sciences at Spelman. The project is a collaboration with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and Stony Brook University, where assistant professor Guanyu Huang serves as co-investigator. "This pipeline introduces students to career opportunities at NASA and research related to NASA TEMPO satellite data," Terrien said.
Over the next two years, the project will offer professional development opportunities open to any Spelman student interested in STEM, along with two application-based student research opportunities, one at Spelman and one at the NASA Marshall Center in Alabama over the summer.
